Crew change at anchorage: planning for the launch boat

Changes off the berth depend on weather, harbour master permission and a boat that has to be booked before anyone knows if it can sail. Here is how we manage that uncertainty.

Crew changes at anchorage are routine in Türkiye — at the Bosphorus anchorages, in Nemrut Bay, off Mersin. They are also the ones most likely to slip, because three things have to line up that are outside anyone's control: weather within limits, harbour master permission, and a boat available in the window.

Book provisionally, confirm late

The temptation is to wait for certainty before booking the launch. That is backwards. Boats at the busy anchorages are committed early, so we book provisionally against the forecast and confirm the day before. Cancelling a provisional booking costs a fraction of finding a boat at short notice.

Weather limits are not a formality

Launch operators have limits and they hold to them, correctly. A crew transfer in marginal conditions with luggage and a pilot ladder is where people get hurt. When the forecast is against us we say so early enough for the crew manager to rebook flights rather than stranding people in a hotel.

Baggage and documents

Signing-on crew arrive with luggage that has to go up a pilot ladder. Signing-off crew come down with theirs. It sounds trivial and it is the part that most often causes delay. We plan the baggage handling separately from the people and brief the launch crew accordingly.

The agent goes with them

Immigration formalities at anchorage require an agent escort. That is not a service line for its own sake — it is the person who resolves it when a seaman's book endorsement is questioned halfway through the transfer.

Build in the buffer

Where the schedule allows, we plan anchorage changes with a day of margin and a hotel held on flexible release. It costs very little and it converts a failed change into a delayed one.
